I must say when on Saturday night when I decided to go see the movie "Precious" I was a little apprehensive. I wasn't sure if it was going to live up to the hype and the amazing reviews already given the movie but, it did plus some. The movie itself is based on of the novel 'Push' by Sapphire. It's about a sixteen year old girl who is pregnant with her second child from her father, who has big dreams to make it big one day but is brought down by a monstrous mother (Mo'Nique) who uses her just so she can keep an income coming in. Her life takes a change for the better when she is accepted into an alternative school where she finally learns how to read and write. After the birth of her second child, she moves out after a blow out with her mother and starts moving forward in her life.
Nominations and awards will definitely be given out for this movie. Mo'Nique makes her character very believable. She's very dynamic in her part. She really gives a third dimension to how the mother character is so mean and nasty. She's the mother that you wouldn't wish on anyone! Considering she has children of her own I give her major kudos, and not only because shes a Baltimore native. Another nomination will definitely be going to new actress Gabby Sidibe. She really delivers as a down and out teenager who has been beaten down and picked on most of her life. She really brings the viewer into the world of 'Precious', and it makes one stop and think about how much better everyone of us has it. Overall, this movie is the best 2009 had to offer. One scene really sticks out the most in the movie…it was a scene with Mo'Nique, Gabby and Mariah Carey. Mariah plays the social worker who reunites Precious and Mary for the last time to figure out exactly why Precious should go back to live with her mother Mary. The scene itself was dramatic the way Mary bares her soul about why she had a deep hatred for her daughter. It litterally almost brings you tears and disgust, which rarely happens and shows that even though Mary was such a monster to Precious, she was still human. Also, that something was wrong with her mentally.
